Accustomed to seeing awesome deals on smaller purchases, Groupon’s Chicago subscribers were surprised to see an amazing deal on a college course popping up in their inbox. “It wasn’t as cheap as $10 for a pedicure or $20 for fitness classes,” wrote Jodi Cohen in the Chicago Tribune, but the deal for an Introduction to Teaching class at National Louis University (NLU) “tipped,” and in all, 18 students took advantage of the offer. In the meantime, putting the NLU brand out in front of thousands of loyal Groupon subscribers—not to mention CNN, readers of SlateThe Atlantic, and countless other regional and local media outlets—also meant measurable success for the client.
